Job Description

For this rotational program, we are seeking strong leaders who are results-driven and thrive on making significant decisions to impact Transport America's operations.  This program will provide you with great opportunities to make an immediate impact on our business through your achievements. We are looking for individuals who exhibit a strong personal commitment to teamwork and have demonstrated the ability to communicate and influence others.

In this role, you'll also be assigned a mentor.  This internal partner will assist you in navigating the culture of the organization as well as providing a seasoned perspective as you progress through the different areas of Operations. 

Specifically, this position includes a 12-18 month rotation in the following operations areas:

  • Customer Service:  Deliver service that exceeds the customer's goals and TA's service objectives.  Work directly with Customer Service to develop customer relationships and learn various customer accounts.  Understand region, network & customer expectations.  Take initiative & independently solve customer issues, engage peers and leadership when necessary.  Proactively solicit freight from customers.  Monitor customer accounts, freight order entry, appointment scheduling and trip monitoring.
  • Operations Support (2nd or 3rd shift hours):  Dispatching and tracking drivers and ensuring they have necessary information to be safe and deliver loads successfully.  Responding to Driver messages, problem solving and providing necessary information to enable Driver to service the customer in a timely manner.  Communicating effectively with customers and relaying customer requirements and expectations to the Driver.  Monitoring the execution of customers' loads.  Communicating critical information and issues to appropriate daytime employees.
  • Driver Recruiting:  Meet hiring goals by recruiting experienced drivers and owner operators.  Monitor competition in assigned recruitment area.  Contribute to building a positive team atmosphere.  Qualify potential drivers based on company hiring guidelines.
  • Logistics/Brokerage:  Identification and solicitation of freight based on company needs in various geographic markets.  Ensure customer orders are captured in the system in a timely and accurate manner, to meet the requirements of the customer.  Monitor the execution of customers' loads from initial order through to successful completion.  Update internal and external databases and websites as required.
  • Fleet Management:  Providing a work environment that focuses on delivering excellence, problem solving, and managing mutual accountability.  Leading, coaching and developing a team of Drivers.  Building a positive working relationship with assigned fleet.  Maintaining or exceeding on-time performance requirements.
  • Planning:  Match loads and drivers to meet TA's Customer commitments while maximizing the utilization of TA's assets, working with Operations personnel.  Create and execute plans in accordance with customer expectations, driver needs and system balance and communicate network balance requirements.  Accurately track, record and control use of equipment.  Contact appropriate groups timely to resolve equipment issues.

Following successful completion of the Associate Operations Leader rotation, you will be eligible for transition to a key role in Operations that mutually fulfills your career aspirations and TA business needs. In order to maximize your development and prepare you for increasing responsibility as a leader at Transport America, you will gain exposure and experience in a variety of assignments.



Requirements and Core Competencies


  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain or similar field required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of truck transportation/logistics.
  • Strong, demonstrated leadership capabilities, includes building effective teams.
  • Outstanding communication skills.
  • Effectively copes with change and is energized by tough challenges.
  • Strong problem solving capabilities and timely decision making. Identifies options including the short and long term impact on business operations.
  • The ability to work 1 weekend day per month and 1 holiday per year.
